$100.....

If you only had $100 to entertain family of 4 in NY for the day,how would you do it and feel you had the best the big city has to offer??

$100.....

You could ride the Staten Island ferry, That%26#39;s free. From there you could take in the view of the Statue Of Liberty. You could take the subway to Brooklyn then walk over the Brookly Bridge.

There%26#39;s Central Park, Free!

you could go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While the donations are suggested and you could give as much as you feel you can.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

$100.....

Give each one $25, and meet up later on for some sightseeing.

On a nice day, walking can be the cheapest and most reqarding activity in Manhattan. You can discover so many interesting neighborhoods and people along the way. I always love walking up Broadway and seeing the different areas as you travel - Chinatown, Little Italy, SoHo, et al...

Definitely start out at the Metropolitan Museum of At-give them $10 or $20 for the family. Then grab some pizza, walk though Central Park and take the subway downtown to Ground Zero, the Staten Island Ferry and then subway to Chinatown for dinner.I%26#39;d check Time Out New York and New York Magazine to see if there were any free concerts or theatre(as there is all summer) and enjoy that.

It would depend on who the family was (ages, m/f, interests), day of the week and time of year.

There%26#39;s LOTS of free stuff to do. Here%26#39;s just some of it

www.nycvisit.com/content/index.cfm鈥?/a>

I think some of the best free things include

a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge

a ride on the Staten Island ferry

a day (or half day) with a Big Apple Greeter

I vote for disfan%26#39;s itinerary!

Places to eat

My 10 year old son and I will be in Cooperstown for a few days in early August. We are staying at the Landmark Inn (hopefully the good reviews on TripAdvisor are correct).

We plan to hit the HOF for two days before heading to Lake Placid for two days.

Any suggestions for lunch and dinner while we are in Cooperstown?

Also - would we be able to get on Doubleday Field to play some catch? Or is access restricted?

Thanks

Places to eat

For burgers salads sandwiches and casual fare..try the Doubleday Cafe on Main Street..Nicolettas also on Main Street has very good Italian/Continental Fare, The Otesaga Hotel has excellent food and a Sunday Brunch that is fabulous..beautiful too overlooking the lake...and a short way out of town at the marina, is Blue Mingo, a great little lakeside bistro with great atmosphere and food..there are lots of dining options in and around town..just ask your hotel about which ones take reservations..it will be busy in August..have fun

You might do a search on foodnetwork.com. I know Rachael Ray did a $40 a Day show there recently and she always has good suggestions.

Yum to Nicolettas!!!! Always a great restaurant for Lake Placid - right across from the olympic hockey rink.

Nicoletta%26#39;s in Cooperstown is excellent for dinner. There%26#39;s also a little deli almost right next door to Nicoletta%26#39;s (sorry, I have forgotten the name) which has great sandwiches, salads and a few baked goods. We were there on a rainy weekend this past fall and Doubleday Field was closed and gated. I don%26#39;t know if there is access when the weather is nice.

Just got back from Cooperstown. The suggestions given are good choices. We ate frequent meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at Doubleday Cafe. Ya gotta love the slogan on the back of their t-shirts re: Cooperstown, ';A drinking town with a baseball problem.';

As for Doubleday Field, there were games being played throughout the day - you could come and go to watch. I don%26#39;t recall a time when the fields were empty if you want to play catch though.

As for parking on Main Street (where HOF and shops are located), parking is 2 hours. Traffic enforcement officers put chalk markings on tires and then check later on, so be careful.

I live in Cooperstown - SO, yes the Doubleday Cafe and Nicolettas are great places to eat. But try the Cooperstown Diner, small and tucked into Main Street- but its where the locals go - open for breakfast, lunch, dinner. But a 10 year old boy mught like Sal%26#39;s Pizzeria, also on Main st. THere%26#39;s also the Pioneer Street Patio for indoor or outdoor dining. THe Bistro, down the alley from the Hall of Fame and The Bull Pen around the corner from the HOF are also really good. The Bull Pen does lunch sandwiches on bagels - and more. OR drive 3 miles out of town to the Fly Creek Cider Mill-lots of goodies besides the cider, and the usual MacDonalds, Pizza Hut and numerous ice cream stands. WE Cooperstownians love to eat!!

The market next the Nocoletta%26#39;s is Danny%26#39;s Market. They have great sandwiches that you can take to the neighboring park or the lake front for a picnic. Don%26#39;t miss Schneider%26#39;s Bakery for truly the best doughnuts on earth. You may need to jog around the lake to work them off but it%26#39;ll be worth it. For a quick bite, Sal%26#39;s Pizza on Main Street is good.

Thanks for the all the advice. We ended up with a late meal at Sal%26#39;s Pizzeria the first night we were in Cooperstown. Good pizza and the least expensive meal we ate on our vacation. We had stayed until nearly 9:00 p.m. at the Hall, so many of the restaurants were not open.

We had lunch at the Doubleday Cafe. Very good food and a good time. We went in about 11:30 and the crowd was not too bad.

We had dinner the second night at the Short Stop. Food was good, but the service was very slow. I could not recommend due to the slowness of service. We tried a few of the places recommended, but there was either a long wait or nothing on the menu that interested my 10 year-old.

Thanks also for the heads-up on the no refills on drinks. I found the same when we went to Lake Placid after we left Cooperstown. Maybe it is due to the lack of national chain restaurants in either town, but I have not been to restaurants with no refills on soft drinks or iced tea in many years. Thing is, the price for the drinks is the same as the free refill drinks I get here in Indy and in many cases only half the size. The Doubleday Cafe was around $1.50 for a 12 ounce soft drink.

We eventually realized we should just get the same drink and get a pitcher at most of the restaurants.

We could not get on Doubelday Field to play catch. Access was restricted each time we were there. We did play catch on the front and back yards of our B%26amp;B (Landmark Inn - I submitted a separate review).

Cannot believe that no one mentioned Brooks BBQ chicken in Oneotna. This restaurant was featured on the Food Network with Rachel Ray as best fod and best bargin. You will not believe how cheap this place is. The bbq chicken is out of this world. The ribs are really good too, if you like sweet ribs! They do not serve alcohol in case you like a beer or glass of wine with dinner. It is probably a 25 min ride from Cooperstown, believe me you wont be sorry!

Airport transfers

Can anyone tell me how far it is from LGA to JFK...I%26#39;m flying into LGA but need to transfer over to JFK...I only have 3 hours to make the connection....Will this be a problem? I%26#39;m flying into from Canada and will need to clear customs first, get my bags and then transfer over to JFK and check in again

I loved NY!

Well we got back yesterday after five wonderful action filled days in NY. To be honest going I really was not sure I would like it but as everyone I know has been there, I thought I would just check it out. Wow, it was bigger, better, more beautiful, friendlier and much much more than expected. Weather was kind to us, mild at first then gradually colder to freezing but that was good for walking and sightseeing. We stayed at Radio City Apartments - excellent in every way - great location, great rooms, plenty of space and facilities, very clean, staff very good and friendly and helpful - excellent accomodation and great value. We loved Central Park and visited it several times, did the usual Rock and Empire buildings, Staten Island Ferry, took a train upstate for a day just to see outside the city and lots more I can%26#39;t think straight yet!! We ate really well - wonderful deli next to RCA for lunches and breakfasts, had lovely mexican food at Mi Nidito elnidos.com/minidito/鈥ebsiteminidito.html

best meal we had and wonderful service and value. Shopping in NY was amazing - the variety and value and prices!! Assistants at Century 21 were so grumpy but at Macys it was a pleasure to shop there - great facitities, friendly helpful staff and a huge range of items - we loved it!! Visitors get a discount card, which along with keen prices and sales items, meant we came back heavily laden with bargains!! We were lucky enough to have a Big Apple Greeter show us around and for that we are so grateful. Saw lots of things we would never have found in guidebooks. We fly over and back with Aer Lingus - again a great experience - you were right Polly - Aer Lingus way better!!! Subway was great - took a bit of thought to get it right but a marvellous way of getting around quickly and real value for a weekly pass. Well I think thats about all for now as I am still very tired but just wanted to post while things were fresh in my mind. I will do up a review on RCA and post photos too. New York is something else alright!

I loved NY!

Thanks for the report. Get some rest. ;)

I loved NY!

Thanks for posting! Its good to hear Radio City has your approval since we%26#39;ll be staying there soon - please post back if you remember the name of that deli!

Also, pleased to hear that you coped with the weather as I%26#39;ve been concerned it might be colder than we%26#39;re used to in March!

Hi limerick, so glad you had a great time and flight lol. we go october 27th cant wait.

polly.

Think its called the Backstage Deli - its two doors to your left as you exit, heading out towards TimeSq/Broadway direction. Yummy breakfast/lunches that will fill you up all day. Enjoy yourselves you lucky people! Ah well, we are planning next years trip so can%26#39;t complain too much and it will def be RCA again so thats a good sign? Don%26#39;t worry about cold - good hat, scarf and gloves and you can cope with anything the weather throws at you! Wear layers too as our first few days were too warm!! Be sure to let us know how you get on too! Bon Voyage to you both!

No one goes to Century 21 for the staff%26#39;s helpful attitude or well run cash register area : ) Glad you had fun, come back again

upscale, romantic Italian or seafood restaurant

Looking for a romantic upscale restaurant near (not neccesarily in) the theater district. Is Le Bernadin worth the money? Willing to spend for outstanding service, food and setting. Have heard l%26#39;Impero mentioned before. Thoughts?

upscale, romantic Italian or seafood restaurant

L%26#39;impero is very nice for special occasion dining. A very pretty restaurant, great service and delicious homemade pasta dishes.

Le Bernardin is a very upscale fish house (they call it that). Very elegant, classy and expensive.

Two very nice choices. Read more about these on menupages.com.

upscale, romantic Italian or seafood restaurant

How about ViceVersa? Any opinions?

I was listening to a public radio program this past weekend called the splendid table (love it). One of the questions was where%26#39;s the best seafood in NYC. Le Bernardin was the first place mentioned and the reviewer pointed out this was the first place in the US that started to offer to cook your seafood at diff. temps. (rather than all well done). Look at their menu and decide if it%26#39;s for you. It%26#39;s certainly worth the price and the experience.

http://www.le-bernardin.com/menu_dinner.html

His other 2 picks were Esca (in theater district but I%26#39;m not sure it%26#39;s very romantic---but I don%26#39;t know-haven%26#39;t been) and Pearl Oyster Bar in the village. Here%26#39;s the list. YOu may be able to hear the broadcast there.

鈥ublicradio.org/whereweeat/travel_nyseafood鈥?/a>

I thought L%26#39;Impero was terrific, but again not what you may be used to for Italian. Again, look at the menu. I had lunch there and thought the ambiance was lovely and the food very good.

ViceVersa is very good and very nice, but in a totally different category in terms of upscaleness.

Piano Due is a gorgeous place (near Rockefeller Center) and in the same league/price as Le Bernard. or L%26#39;Impero, but I haven%26#39;t eaten there recently and the reviews on menupages are somewhat mixed.

For a romantic Italian, Barbetta, on Restaurant Row, is a beautiful place, but the food can be uneven--sometimes good, sometimes not so.

My ';go to'; Italians for romance are Erminia (upper east side), Il Buco (village), Scalini Fedeli (Tribeca). Why does it have to be midtown? Are you going to the theater? If yes, consider the fact that pre theater, you%26#39;ll be somewhat rushed.

Should have added Oceana was also mentioned as a top seafood place. It%26#39;s midtown but on the east side. The inside of the place looks like a ship. Recent reviews on menupages not good.

Actually it is pre-theater and that is why I was looking midtown. I hate to be rushed but post-theater is pretty late for a big meal. Leaning toward Italian now. This is a quick weekend trip for my wifes birthday. We are dining at Daniel on Friday night.

After Daniel, Le B. would be overkill and I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s worth the $$$ before theater. Not enough time to enjoy. One place I forgot to mention is the Sea Grill. Overlooking the ice rink at Rockefeller Center. I think romantic and decent seafood.

Another idea pre theater is the 21 Club (they have a $40 prix fixe or a la carte). It%26#39;s classic NY. Sit in the bar area for funky charm.

Or, for Italian, go to Barbetta. It%26#39;s a beautiful townhouse. ViceVersa also good but not as luxurious looking.

L%26#39;Impero is too far from the theater district.

Just back from NY theater trip and we really enjoyed Maria Pia on W. 51st Street. The $21.95 prix fixe was good - and the menu was excellent with good wine choices. Cozy in front and atrium in back.

319 W. 51st Street. 212-765-6463. mariapianyc.com

The real upscale (haute) places are not suitable for pre-theater. You would be rushing. (Forget L%26#39;Impero or Le Bernardin)

Places more suited to pre-theater that you might enjoy include the aforementioned 21 Club, ViceVersa (fun, good service, but not overly romantic), Le Madeleine, Orso, db Bistro Moderne, LCB Brasserie Rachou (formerly La Cote Basque, now a brasserie), Redeye Grill (seafood), Town.

Billy Bob Pacifier

Anyone know where I can purchase Billy Bob dummies in New York, preferribly Midtown area, not allowed to sell them in UK shops.

Billy Bob Pacifier

OK, I just had to Google that one!

Turns out I don%26#39;t know where to find the pacifiers, but I have seen the fake teeth at various stores, such as Party City (various locations) and Balloon Salloon (Tribeca), gag and novelty stores in the Village, etc, esp during Halloween season. I def saw them at Urban Outfitters and Ricky%26#39;s Cosmetics a long while ago, but not sure if they still carry them.

Why are the pacifiers prohibited in the UK?

Why not order them online?

http://getbubbateeth.com/

Billy Bob Pacifier

queensboulevard thank you for taking time to reply, The pacifiers are band in the UK due to health and safety reasons and the reason for not ordering them online is.......well any excuse to come back to your country is a good excuse!

    Shopping for jeans and shoes

Hi, My boyfriend and I are travelling to New york in April for 5 days. I want to go shopping but don%26#39;t want to bore him too much with it! Where can I purchase good jeans (perferably a designer bargin) and any tips for cool shoe shops ? Cheers

    Shopping for jeans and shoes

The possibilities are endless. You might want to try doing it all under one roof at somewhere like Macys who has a good selection of shoes and sells several brands of jeans.

    Shopping for jeans and shoes

If you%26#39;re looking for bargains, that may take some more searching. Loehmann%26#39;s and Century 21 are just 2 of many discount shops that carry designer jeans as well as other things. But given the good exchange rate, if you don%26#39;t want to shop too much, why not just go someplace where you%26#39;ll find a large selection. Barney%26#39;s Coop has a large array of designer jeans. You can browse the brands they carry here

    http://www.barneys.com/b/browse/designer.s

It%26#39;s also true at either Macy%26#39;s or Bloomingdales, you can get an extra 11% visitor%26#39;s discount by registering at customer service before shopping. Just one of several previous threads on the subject

    tripadvisor.com/鈥?681870

For ';cool'; shoe shops....the same places mentioned above will havfe designer discounts and lots of designer styles respectively. Saks Fifth Ave. and Bergdorf Goodman also have good designer shoe depts (pricey). DSW is a big discount store only for shoes-several locations.

Shuttle Service or taxi to the airport

This is my first time to NYC and I will only be there for the weekend so every minute counts. Do you think I should arrange for a shuttle to pick me and my daughter up from Club Quarters Midtown (they pick up 3 1/2 hours before our flight), or do you think we should catch a taxi?

Shuttle Service or taxi to the airport

Everybody always complains about the terrible experiences they have with the shuttles, and they do not save alot of money. DO NOT waste your time with the shuttles, there are posts upon posts about the awful experiences.

A taxi to LaGuardia will cost less than $30.00 from Midtown. It is also fairly simple to take public transportation for $2.00 per person and you can leave the Club Quarters two hours and 15 to two hours and 30 minutes before your flight.

Shuttle Service or taxi to the airport

Are you flying from La Gauardia or JFK? Actually, doesn%26#39;t really matter, if time is your concern, take a taxi

We are flying out of La Gauardia. It sounds like we will save about an hour by taking a taxi and the shuttle price was $30, so there is really no savings.

    THANK YOU!

No point in a shared shuttle to LGA but depending on what time you%26#39;re leaving Manhattan and when, you might want to consider ordering a car service in advance. That way you don%26#39;t have to worry about finding a taxi if you%26#39;re leaving at a busy time.

    limores.net

    carmellimo.com

It will cost about the same as a taxi.

    Sports Shops

Hi, any tips for big and interesting sports shops?

    Sports Shops

Paragon Sports is just one of many places for both clothes and equipment.

    http://www.paragonsports.com/Paragon/Shop

    Store Hours

    Monday thru Saturday 10:00am - 8:00pm.

    Sunday 11:30am - 7:00pm.

867 Broadway, New York, NY 10003

The more specific you are on what you want, the better the answers you%26#39;ll get. Whether for clothing or equipment, you want sporting goods shops. There are also some specialty shops for individual sports like tennis, skiing, bicycling, golf etc. So what is it you%26#39;re looking for?

    Sports Shops

Niketown on 57th is also a lot of fun. 5 futuristic floors of sneakers and more. (near 5th ave, just behind Tiffanys)

You can try Modells, they are just near times square - I found another store on Broadway further downtown - they also carry casual clothing like jeans also work gear.

I agree - hard to bear Paragon for breadth and high quality.

Modells is a great chain for baseball, tennis, football, running gear, clothes, etc.

    www.modells.com

Super Runners Shops are, obviously, for runners and others.

Foor Locker and Lady Foot Locker do clothes and sneakers (trainers)

Sports Authority is mostly clothes and small gear (small weights, hats, visors, etc.)

Never been to NY city...best place to stay??

What is the best place (or even area) to stay in New York if I have never been there? I want something pretty cool. Is being close to shows and stuff very important since you can take cabs everywhere?? I just want a neat place that has the ';feel';.

Never been to NY city...best place to stay??

Best place to stay depends on the individual and your budget. Since the public transit system is very good, it%26#39;s true, not so important to stay near anything in particular. ';Pretty cool'; and ';the feel'; don%26#39;t really mean much to me without some definition and budget. Is pretty cool a hipster downtown vibe (Hotel on Rivington) or a modern skyscraper with great views (Marriott Marquis, Parker Meridien)?

Just keep in mind some of the ';cooler'; hip hotels in NYC have painfully small rooms. If you%26#39;re coming alone, not a problem.

Never been to NY city...best place to stay??

Hotels in Manhattan are expensive. I like both the Upper West Side and the Upper East Side. The Lucerne on he Upper West Side is a good place to stay, not fancy, but very clean. I have previously stayed at The Mark on the Upper East Side, but their rates have gone wonky so I am booked for The Surrey this year.

I like these areas because of their closeness to Central Park and easy walking distance to midtown.

I usually buy a MetroPass to ensure I can ride buses and subways withouit hassle.

My husband always stays at the Marriott Marques for buisness.(hope I spelled that right) He says it is always really nice, but I think 400.00 a nightit the cheapest there. We are staying there the night before Thanksgiving and is costing 500.00.

NYWiz...good point, I will try to define ';cool'; and ';good feel'; better.

I would like a place that is safe to walk around in the evenings, is close to some high profile attractions or buildings, and has fairly nice rooms, and doesn%26#39;t feel too outdated or dreary. This will be for a trip for me and my wife, so we waant something that kind of has some romantic feel to it....even if that comes from the surroundings. BUT I would not enjoy one of those hotels where the rooms are painfully small.

I don%26#39;t know...I just wondered where everyone would stay if they 1) Were going for pleasure instead of work, 2) Were going for their very first time, 3) Were going to get the best feel of the ';Big Apple'; all with a fairly reasonable rate (up to $350 or $400 per night).

Not knowing ANYTHING about NY, I don;t even know what neighborhoods to avoid, which ones have more of a nicer feel, etc. I KNOW NOTHING!! LOL

Someone may know of some slick little hotel with great views, etc. for even less than $350 rate. Maybe there is a little lost gem noone knows about. (ex: what I have read on here about Courtyard by Marriott.

Mid-town is the best location for being able to walk to attractions, shopping, restaurants, theaters, everything. I like the Grand Hyatt on 42nd at Park Avenue. It is adjacent to Grand Central Station, so travel by subway is very easy - you don%26#39;t even have to go outside to enter the terminal. My family stayed there last year the week before Christmas, and are going back again this year. On Hyatt%26#39;s website, you can find rooms as low as $199 per night. For the $400 you mentioned, you can upgrade to a really nice suite, if you want to spend the money. The rooms are nice and roomy, and you can%26#39;t beat the location.

Thanks! I will check that out!

    Anyone else have their favorites?

Seems to me you want something a little different than a large convention-type hotel like the Marriott Marquis and the Hyatt. For something in that same 42nd St. neighborhood, how about the Casablanca, a true boutique hotel with less than 50 rooms?

Recently renovated and currently #4 on the TA NYC hotel ';hit parade';, it%26#39;s less expensive and has more ';personality'; than many others in town; the price includes a continental breakfast and wine %26amp; cheese reception in the afternoon in the lounge, Rick%26#39;s Cafe, which is a fun place to simply relax at other times (there is a fireplace and a piano); and although it%26#39;s not a high end luxury hotel, the Morrocan-themed decor is more exotic and romantic than a chain hotel. I think it%26#39;s a great place for a couple who wish to be in the Times Square area; you can read the TA reviews and see candid traveler photos here:

    tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g60763-d113317-鈥?/a>

    Thanks for the suggestion!

I am not opposed to the convention types of hotels. Which are rhe best?

What area does everyone think I should stay in? Times Square?

Very few of us locals can get enthusiastic about staying in Times Square -- not because it%26#39;s not safe, it is... but because of the hurly-burly congestion, sensory overload, and because shopping %26amp; dining in that neighborhood isn%26#39;t that great. But many visitors disagree with us :-)

The fact is that not all the major attractions/sights are clustered together in one neighborhood. So there%26#39;s no one area where you will be in close geographical proximity to everything ';very important.'; But, that%26#39;s of little consequence because our subway system is so good. So may I suggest that you take a step back to reflect a bit more on what%26#39;s most important to you... what kind of neighborhood (residential or more touristy), the type of hotel with what kind of ambiance/decor, what kinds of things do you see yourselves doing in addition to going to a show, e.g., museums? There are oodles of places to stay, so without some concrete focus to help yourself narrow the possibilities, you could make yourself fairly batty :-)

Finding a place with ';the feel'; can mean different things to different people. If you want that ';I%26#39;m in New York'; feeling, yes, Times Square has it, even if it IS filled with a lot of chain stores now. It%26#39;s central and easy to get anywhere.

Do you like ultra hip and modern? The ';W'; hotel chain offers the ultra hip, really wonderful beds, and the extended services you get a boring Hyatt or Sheraton.

The ';W New York Times Square'; was the tops in my visits to NYC. The decor is sleek and sexy and all rooms are raised to over the 7th floor, so you get the views without the noise. Make use of the ';Whatever, Whenever'; service (free) and you can%26#39;t lose in finding dinner, show tickets, etc. But be warned, it is a ';modern'; look.

The prices vary wildly by time of year just about everywhere... can be $200 or $500, depending on the size of the room and date.

Use a AAA card for a discount at a lot of chains. (We saved $400 on our most recent stay... it%26#39;s worth the yearly fee!)

BTW, yes you can take cabs everywhere, but that can be pricey... the subway is quick and cheap, as are buses when there is light traffic. I WOULD stick to a cab to/from the airport... less stress, even for the price.

    Rent - the musical

I am in NYC for four days at the beginning of Feb, Sat - Weds, and i%26#39;d really like to see Rent, possibly on the Sunday evening. But i don%26#39;t want to commit to buying a ticket, just incase plans change. Does anyone know what the possiblity is of this show being at the booth in Times Sq? Is it a popular show as in, sold out most of the time... or would i be okay to take a chance and get a ticket on the day?

    Thanks.

    Rent - the musical

RENT was %26#39;on the board%26#39; as they say in NYC - ALL last week - if that trend continues you should have no trouble getting discount tickets.

    Good Luck!

    Poppa

    Rent - the musical

you could also try for the lottery for $20 tickets

It%26#39;s popular but rarely sold out. It%26#39;s been playing a long time. I%26#39;d say chances are good in general to find Rent at the TKTS booth, but you should know not many of the shows have Sun. NIGHT performances. Most just do matinees on Sun. So for someone looking to go on a Sun. night, the options are much more limited. The TKTS booth downtown at the seaport is closed on Suns. right now.

The booth at the Marriott hotel starts selling evening shows at 3 pm.

For more info look at tdf.org/tkts

Thanks for your replies. I looked on ticketmaster.com and Rent does have an evening performance on Sundays at 7pm. I might try for the $20 lottery tickets... how do i go about doing that?

I%26#39;m a big fan of the official discounted ticket booth though, we have the same in London in Leicester Sq, and me and my friend always get our tickets from that whenever we feeling like going to the theatre, turning up and seeing what is available is half the fun! I%26#39;m sure i will find something i like even if Rent isn%26#39;t available. :)

  • my first trip to new york

We are planning our first to New York at the end of February. New York is somewhere I have always wanted to visit. I want to make the best of our trip so some good advice and guidance would be most helpful. I have been researching lots and lots but it appears to be mind boggling! Any recommendations on restaurants and great places to eat, shopping for bargains, a recommendation on an outlet village.

Also looking at taking a train to Boston - has anyone got any advice or tips on this.

Any tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

my first trip to new york

    You will love it!!

For a start get yourself a good guide book. Its a great start and will give you loads of ideas to get you going.

This forum is a god send.Check out other peoples trip reports, see what they enjoyed.

Its hard giving specific advice without knowing what you like. Narrow your questions down a bit and I promise there is lots of help on here.

By the way,it could be very cold so be prepared...lots of layers!!

my first trip to new york

    Thank you for your post.

Museums aren%26#39;t really my thing although if there are any that are worth visiting we will. I want to do all the usual sites of the city, how to get discounts on tickets for attractions would be useful.

The main thing for me will be the shopping I love department stores, but also love to find bargains.

Both of us love to experience nice food when we visit somewhere new, there%26#39;s not much we don%26#39;t like. Would like to find a couple of nice restaurants.

Don%26#39;t mind if it%26#39;s cold, would be great if it snowed too!!

If there are any museums worth visitng?

Um, yes, there are a few....

Really, the question is what kind of museum you like. Do you think the Louvre is worth visiting? If not, you won%26#39;t like the Metropolitan either -- but if you do, the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the great art museums of the world. In addition to the art museums , there are other musuems as well that are very worth visiting if you are interested in their subject matter -- for example, the Tenement museum shows you how improverished immigrants lived when they came to New York, or the Fire Musuem shows you items and equipemtn and images and artifacts from 200 years of firefighting in New York City -- fascinating to any fireman, but likely to bore some people just as much.

New York is a world class metropolis, much as London is. What would you do if you went to London? Well, you can do most of the same kinds of things in New York -- just with a different accent...

Dress code for Live w/ Regis and Kelly

    Hi all,

Arriving late Wed. night ( have tiks to Live on Thursday)...just wandering what everyone wears? The only mention on my tiks and the website..is to dress warm due to air cond. Are jeans permissable?

    Thanks in advance.

Dress code for Live w/ Regis and Kelly

dress code, really what dress code at that show everyone wears something different really, not dressed up for most people when they go to that show/ depends on where you will be sitting on how cold you will actually feel middle is probably a bit warmer than the sides, from what i have notice, i almost always sit middle

Lots of people wear jeans to Live

Dress code for Live w/ Regis and Kelly

So glad you asked this; that%26#39;s what I came on the forum to find out! How long did it take you to get tickets? I just sent in a request for March, but it%26#39;s very last minute so I requested tickets for August as my back up choices. Please let me know how all goes! How early do you have to get there? Hope you have lots of fun, can%26#39;t wait to go, myself.

I am also wanting to go to LIVE, but in June. Did you all send in a written request or fill out the on-line request? I tried the on-line request several times, but kept getting an error message. I would love to get tickets!!

    missmisery and nicby,

I requested tickets back in August and requested a date in October....my trip in October came and went and didn%26#39;t hear a thing. Last week I open my mailbox..and there are the tiks for January 25th! I requested through snail mail...not online. I guess they were full for October, and being busy I%26#39;m sure, don%26#39;t let you know that. I scrambled to get a one night trip together to make it to this show. Going up late Wed. night, sleeping about 4 hours, and going to get in line at about 6:30....the letter you get (which serves as your tiks) says check in is at 7:45am...HOWEVER I was told by numerous people that the sooner you get there...the better the chance of actually getting in ( ';ticket distribution is at times in excess of studio capacity';) and better choice of seats. So....off I am to freeze my butt off just to see Reeg and Kelly. Good luck with your tickets requests...and I will post back about my trip!

I have no idea if its the same for Regis %26amp; Kelly, but years ago I attended a taping of Montel Williams%26#39; show and they selected people in more brightly colored clothing to sit further forward where they would be seen when the camera pans the crowd. The last thing they wanted was a sea of black-clad NYers... We ended up in the back...

so, if you want more of a chance of showing up on camera, wear something bright.

nope at live its first come first seated besides the vips, after they are seated at least the last time i was there in dec they let u choose your seats as you enter the show studio

Well, that%26#39;s certainly a very fair thing for them to do, ricki. If only all shows were like that! Years ago, I went to a taping of the Charlie Rose Show when it was done in DC. We were all told where to sit. The best dressed people--and the best looking and youngest adults--got the best seats.

It was the same at the View, SueFee. I ended up way over in the last seat way over on the side. Guess I should have worn bright red and dyed my hair so I%26#39;d look younger!

LOL, NYCforme! Had we known at the time! We ended up in the next to the last row. Hmmm--should have worn my fanciest outfit and put on more makeup...

lol I always get a good seat at any of the shows :) been to many all over the world

    Novotel vs. Edison

    HELP!!!

We have reservations at Novotel for March. We are celebrating our anniversary. Someone told me I should have booked with Edison. Any reason why Edison would be better (except for location).

    Novotel vs. Edison

There%26#39;s an Irish saying, ';Faraway cows have long horns';. It%26#39;s a reference to the horns on their head as opposed to evidence of prowess of a different kind. Basically, the saying is a metaphor for the human belief that ';there%26#39;s always something better around the next corner';.

Novotel gets great reviews on this site. Just because ';someone'; told you the Edison was better, I would not believe this in the absence of compelling evidence. But, for your own peace of mind, why not check out the reviews of both the Edison and the Novotel on this site ? That%26#39;s what it%26#39;s there for. Instead of basing your judgments solely on the views of ';someone';.

    Novotel vs. Edison

Oh and incidentally, Novotel ranks 84th of the hotels on Tripadvisor. The Edison is 171th. Quite a differential.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Novotel and it is a solid 3* hotel, have not stayed at the Edison but it is a no frills, decent 2* hotel.

I stayed at the Edison in October 2005 and was very disappointed. The room was very dirty and dark. The staff was very unfriendly. The only good thing was the location.

I stayed at the Novotel and was satisfied with the hotel. Decent price, good service, friendly staff and great location.

We are planning on staying at the Edison this coming weekend on the advice of very good friends who stay there frequently while in NYC. We got a very good price directly from the hotel staff and are eager to see if it matches some of the reviews on Tripadvisor. I will let everyone know what I think when I return. We hope the weather is decent - plan on doing lots of walking!! Any advice for a good ';happy hour'; ar on Sunday night??

We stayed at the Eddison it was awful. i would never recomend it. It was very small and my clothes smealt like cigarette%26#39;s for days after. stay at the novotel

Have only stayed at the Edison and would not recommend it for anything other than location. The room was very small and cramped and I could not imagine ';celebrating'; anything in it!!!

The Novotel is a modern skyscraper with some nice views. The Edison is an older building and not nearly as nice. B/w the 2, I would certainly pick the Novotel. Is it the best place for an anniversary celebration? Depends on your budget and the price you got at the Novotel. If it%26#39;s cancellable, you have time to look for better deals. There%26#39;s a new offer on travelzoo.com today for the Muse hotel for $199/night. The room would be nicer, but not necessarily the view.

Wherever you decide to stay, make sure you tell them in advance and on check in you%26#39;re celebrating a special anniversary.

    self catering apartments?

My husband and I would love to stay in an apartment / loft for 1 week in July. We would like somewhere cool, clean and not too expensive ($1250 tops) with cooking facilities / own bathroom perhaps in soho or lower east side. It would be great to be near some trendy hangouts / bars / art galleries. We have looked at a few hotels but we would prefer the independance of having our own place. Got any suggestions or ideas?

    thanks.

    Hi Lisa

I%26#39;ve booked into the Best Western Hospitality House in November, It%26#39;s close to the Rockerfeller centre etc. one and two bedroom apartments with breakfast provided. Read the reviews on this site for more info. Located in midtown so don%26#39;t know if it would suit. Let me know please

I stayed at the BW Hospitality House in Sept. Good value. Noisy part of town so bring earplugs but overall it is a nice apartment for the $$ in a great location.

We have a late filght on our departure date - was there anywhere to store bags after checkout?

I am not sure about that but normally the front desk is very accomodating. There is a room I think they use for lounging/bathroom breaks etc so you could ask them to hold the luggage for you.

Small lobby and the hotel is kind of hidden away but a pretty nice place.

$1250/week is a budget price. To find something downtown as you describe, you%26#39;d have to invest some time researching since there are not really apt./hotels downtown as you describe. Here%26#39;s one that might interest you

Any ideas on accommodation for 2 guys?

Looking to spend 4-5 days in NYC in March. Don%26#39;t really want to have to share a hotel room with friend. Can you recommend serviced apartment type arrangement or similar that has 2 bedrooms?

Preference for central location. Prepared to spend a bit to have a good pad.

    Thanks!

    Ben.

Any ideas on accommodation for 2 guys?

Check out the affinia hotels on affinia.com. Many are suites. Also check Radio City Apartments and Murray Hill East Suites. The affinia hotels would be nicer though.

Any ideas on accommodation for 2 guys?

Another idea is to bid on Priceline for 2 rooms at the same hotel. You could get 2 rooms at a 4* hotel for $115-140/night each.

Depending on your budget, you could also probably get connecting rooms at some hotels if you don%26#39;t want to be totally separate. I have a friend who%26#39;s partner snores. They get a suite at the Parker Meridien with a connected bedroom. The PM also has a rooftop swimming pool. ;)

Check out The Comfort Inn Chelsea at 18 W. 25th St. They have ';family suites'; that are actually 2 separate bedrooms (1 king, 2 doubles) and 1 bath. This is in an older hotel that was bought and renovated by Choice Hotels (Comfort Inn`s parent company) less than a year ago so rooms are compact and well maintained. Expanded continenal breakfast is included. Chances are this will be a better price then 2 hotel rooms and a 1 bedroom suite (where someone would have to sleep on a sofa bed.) It`s centrally located too. choicehotels.com

  • What are the ';Must Dos'; of Cooperstown

Like many others - trying to squeeze an overnight in Cooperstown for my 9 year baseball fanatic. We want to be sure we don%26#39;t miss anything special. We found a hotel room at the Holiday Inn for our family of 5 for one night using tripadvisor advice. Tryint to extend our hotel stay- but at the moment it is booked on both sides...

Can anyone tell me what are the must dos outside of the Baseball Hall of Fame (if you only have 1 night and 2 days)?

Is there a super baseball restaurant in town - fun for the kids?

I heard somewhere there is a baseball bat factory - any good?

Any comments would be welcome! We want to be sure we make most of our short visit! Thanks!

What are the ';Must Dos'; of Cooperstown

The bat factory has only received great reviews from my dedicated New York Yankee family and friends, you can actually order a special bat while you are visiting!

Cooperstown Fun Park has bumper cars, arcade, mini golf, go karts and picnic areas that is a fun filled few hour visit.

As far as food, well I just love tripadvisor..go to cooperstown main page, click on overview tab, choose restaurant overview. Mickie wrote a great overview that I think would be really helpful for you. tripadvisor.com/Travel-g47529-s501/Coopersto… ..I pasted it there for quick cut and paste access for you. The Doubleday cafe is good for burgers and such. Hope the overview page is just what you needed! Have fun!

What are the ';Must Dos'; of Cooperstown

Thanks for your reply. I did not see the overview dining page and as we are going on the induction weekend - I want to be sure to have everything organized ahead of time due to the corws that will be there.

I am just surprised that there does not seem to be a baseball theme restaurant in town - maybe that would be overkill...

Sorry my dots kind of cut that off.. here%26#39;s the actual full link tripadvisor.com/Travel-g47529-s501/Coopersto…

Doubleday Cafe is about as close as we get to a baseball type restaurant that I know of.. you know Abner Doubleday.. baseball... Between Micki%26#39;s detailed food page, I tested the link again it works now, and Doubleday cafe that should be a great start. Have fun!

The Farmer%26#39;s Museum in Coopersfield is excellent. Not baseball related, but a lot of fun.

I agree, the Farmer%26#39;s Museum thing was great, I forgot about that in my posts. I talked to my mom and dad who have been a dozen times, they mentioned that and said there are several baseball themed restaurants nearby, they just aren%26#39;t advertised as such online. Mom mentioned she believes the one they liked most was Mickey Mantle%26#39;s restaurant somewhere there near the museum, she just can%26#39;t remember exactly where, but you cant miss it from the Hall of Fame, they were referred there from the HOF staff themselves. Hope that helps!

Ok once again, I went back and saw that my links didn%26#39;t fully paste.. you have to cut and paste the full link ending at the html..I hit enter and spaced it after the 2nd time so just copy and paste until you hit the space..sorry I dont know why the whole link won%26#39;t paste :( ...also if you look to the right hand side overview is the first link, click that then choose dining overview by Micki...

The highlights of Cooperstown are the Fenimore House Museum containing a great colection of Indian artifacts and a Grandma Moses show, the Farmer%26#39;s Museum located just across the road, lunch buffet at the magnificent Otesaga Hotel located right on Otsego Lake the source of the mighty Susquehana river. Also, three miles south of town on route 28 you%26#39;ll find the studio of nationally reknowned metal sculptor Don Gialanella and his fantastic life-size steel animals.

Go to TJ%26#39;s Place the Home Plate restaurant for baseball memorabilia and Coca-Cola Americana throughout.

The food is casual and varied (full bar, too) and it%26#39;s usually buzzing with activity. Ted and Diane take good care of their customers. It%26#39;s right on Main Street, between Chestnut and Pioneer Streets.

Where It All Began Bats are what you%26#39;re looking for. They are the ones made in Cooperstown. The other bat company ships them in and only engraves them here.

I too am going with my 10 year old son %26amp; husband this week (7/21). We will be there for 3 nights %26amp; almost 4 days. Does anyone have a list of things to do given the time. My husband %26amp; son are big basebal fans. Is there a park they can play bball on? Do we need equipment.? We are staying at the Otesaga resort. Can we walk to most things in the Village? Can we drive to the Fennimore, etc... or is it a zoo %26amp; we should take the trolley?

Is the soccer Hall of Fame good? Is it far away. Our focus is on baseball for this trip. My son %26amp; husband(manager) just finished their All Star baseball season last night %26amp; this trip is a special gift. We are coming from CA %26amp; anticipate being tired on day 1 after a red eye flight. Thanks in advance for any tips.

I heard the Soccer HOF is a joke. There are baseball factories and custom bat places everywhere. We enjoyed watching some games at the Dreams Park and right in Doubleday was fun too (and free).

We went to the Howe Caves on the way home- definitely recommend that- very cool.

I heard the Cooperstown Fun Park is nothing much. We did spend a 1/2 day at Glimmerglass State Park- nice beach with huge picnic area and walking trails. The Glimmerglass Dinner cruise is supposed to be nice also.

My kids liked the movie at the HOF and went right to their favorite players- 2 hrs and they were done.

    Breweries in Cooperstown

I%26#39;ve browsed through all the websites I can find and through this forum (thanks for all the great advice on dining!), but I still have a few more questions.

My boyfriend and I are making a trip early March for the weekend (big baseball fans), and will do the farmer%26#39;s museum and HOF (of course), but does anyone know about nearby breweries that are great for touring and tasting?

And how about a quiet night spot or pub to finish with a few beers at the end of the night?

Also, my boyfriends grandmother said something about a glass museum I have to check out - know what she%26#39;s talking about?

I saw something on the Ommegang Brewery - is it any good?

Thanks in advance for all your help! We%26#39;re really excited about going!

    Breweries in Cooperstown

I%26#39;m going to Cooperstown in April, so I%26#39;ve been doing the research...

there are 2 breweries-Brewery Ommegang %26amp; Cooperstown Brewing Company. Tours are offered at both.

I hope that someone replies about pubs and bars, I%26#39;m also looking places to go.

    Breweries in Cooperstown

I would recommend Brewery Ommegang.....their beer is great, and the tours are always comprehensive and interesting. Check out their website to see if they have any special events going on during your visit, there%26#39;s often music or something happening.

The Farmers%26#39; Museum actually doesn%26#39;t open to the public until April 1, but they will be open every Sunday in March when they do a wonderful pancake breakfast and explain how maple syrup is produced (you can also tour the grounds, but there%26#39;s only limited access to the buildings). Check it out at www.nysha.org.

As far as bars go, you have two choices....Cooley%26#39;s or the Pratt, which are across the street from each other. The bar at the Bistro is nice in the early evening.

The glass museum you%26#39;re looking for is the Corning Museum of Glass, in Corning, NY......and it%26#39;s quite a hike to get there from Cooperstown. Hope this helps!

We enjoyed a few drinks at the Doubleday Cafe. The locals and barmaid were very friendly. We even got a few rounds free from the barmaid as she *nearly* spilt a drink on me! :o)

    Barbie

Ommegang is a great brewery but you shouldn%26#39;t pass up Cooperstown Brewery. Ommegang is the heavy belgian kind where as CB is more like a micro brewery (and it is locally owned!)

Corning Museum of Glass is a little under 3 hours away. For a weekend trip it maybe too far. It is a fabulous place to visit.

Thanks for all your help. We%26#39;re off for the trip this weekend (March 3-5) and I%26#39;m so excited. This is my first real vacation in over five years, so I wanted to be prepared, especially since we%26#39;re visiting in off-season.

And thanks to you, litachagita, for all your info. I did find out a bit after I posted that the museums were closed until april (very disappointing), but the pancake breakfast sounds interesting. I will call on that.

We%26#39;ll probably hit both breweries, since the tour prices are so reasonable and it will be a fun experience.

    thanks

    Should we avoid anywhere?

Arrived yesterday and staying in Times Square. About to explore, any advice on places that we should avoid - both for safety and not bing worth the effort. Only here for 3 days.

    Thanks. Andy

    Should we avoid anywhere?

Get off the computer and go have fun!!! Explore everything that you can--that is the only way that YOU can judge if it is worth it! Keep your wits about you and you will have no problems with safety. Have a great time!

    Should we avoid anywhere?

    I would avoid Times Square.

Q B , you beat me to the punch, by seconds!!! There is a belgian beer bar, Vol de Nuit, 148 w4 st.-you might like

    Queensboulevard,

Is times Square that bad? Just curious.

well, for one thing, it is jam-packed with hordes of tourists....

qb - sorry, you are mistaken - they should avoid Manhattan!

2 nite trip for newbs: which neighborhood as base?

coming in for a weekend in april. we%26#39;d like to take the subway all over - or at least from central park down to battery park :o)

we%26#39;re gonna do the obvious stuff; times sqaure, empire state, the village, ground zero.

i%26#39;m having trouble deciding where to stay as a base for our adventures.

uptown, midtown, the village? where%26#39;s best for a trip like ours?

    thanks~

2 nite trip for newbs: which neighborhood as base?

It does not really matter,if you stay uptown, you will travel downtown to GZ %26amp; the Village, if you stay downtown you will travel uptown to Times Square, ESB, etc. Public transportation in NYC is great and the best bargain in town.

So, stay where you get the best rates and the most bang for your buck in a good hotel.

2 nite trip for newbs: which neighborhood as base?

thanks nycgirl, you sure are an expert.

    anyone else have an opinion?

We were in NYC for the first time back in June and will be returning in April (be prepared to fall in love with a whole city!) and it%26#39;s super easy to get anywhere. Between walking and the subway, you%26#39;ll be fine no matter what area you stay in.

We stayed and will be staying at the Affinia Dumont in Murray Hill. We really liked the area because it%26#39;s somewhat residential and we felt more like we were living there then just on vacation. The Upper West Side is also a lovely neighborhood with some very nice hotels. A lot of people like to stay in or close to Time Square. That was our least favorite area of the city because it was jam packed with tourists.

    Have a wonderful trip!

    ~bump~

    please-help-me-final-bump

    Happytails,

I agree with not staying in the times Square are. Although it is nice you can find good hotels in nice NYC neighborhoods. We stay at the Milburn Hotel (www.milburnhotel.com) on the Upper West side. It is convenient to a subway station and in a great neighborhood. They have all suites with kitchen facilities (studio if there is just two of you) and they are not too expensive. We usually get food for breakfast at the fantastic Fairway market just a block or so away. It is also only a couple of (long) blocks from Central Park.

There are many other nice hotels in good neighborhoods recommended on this site if you look at the old posts. When it comes down to it any of the recommended hotels will be fine.

    thanks everyone!

i try and be good about not asking stupid questions.

i%26#39;ve been to nyc a few times, and i%26#39;ve been reading the archives and reviews here for days. it%26#39;s just such a big city, and so many neighborhoods...let alone hotels. i still feel like a newb.

    any help is good help:)

    ;p

NYCgirl%26#39;s initial advice was good -- Manhattan is not that big, and transportation is easy. Choose hotels based on value. Now, if you come up with two or three hotesl that seem equal in value to you, but one is on the upper west side, and one is at Times Square, and one is in Murray Hill -- come back and ask a more specific question; I think you will get better advice then.

Top of Rock vs. ESB and MMA vs. Natural Hist museum

We booked hotel with New York City Vacation Packages. Included with this were a number of coupons and discounts. Couple of questions about our choices:

    1) We%26#39;ve got free admission (though it seems silly since it%26#39;s on a donation basis anyway) to MMA or the Nat. His. Museium. I%26#39;ve been to MMA and LOVED it and would like to go again. I%26#39;ve never been to the Nat. Hist. Museum. I%26#39;m traveling with my 13 y/o daughter and she%26#39;s quite torn. She%26#39;s an artist in her own right, but then loves animals, dinosaurs, etc. (and we just saw the movie with Ben Stiller). Maybe Nat His museum and then a different art museum (Guggenheim, MoMA)? How to choose?

    2) We have tickets to either ESB or ToR. Can we combine ToR with NBC tour? I wouldn%26#39;t mind doing both, one in morning, one at sunset. Any opinions on this or how to choose?

    Thanks!

Top of Rock vs. ESB and MMA vs. Natural Hist museum

How many days will you be here?

Depending on your collective stamina, you can see both the Met and the Natural History. They are only a crosstown busride away from each other.

You could - in theory - take the ';highlights'; tours of each museum. Start at the Met, then take the bus to the west side. Eat a burger and fries at Big Nick%26#39;s, gather up your strength, and then go to the Natural History.

    http://bignicksnyc.com/

Top of Rock vs. ESB and MMA vs. Natural Hist museum

If your daughter loves animals and is an artist, then the Natural History museum may giver her special pleasures. The dioramas in the museum are justifiably famous -- these are exhibits where an animal is mounted (dead, of course) in a recreation of its natural environment. My kids (11 and 9) love them. Your daughter may be especially interested in them due to their high artistic merit. Here%26#39;s a fascinating link to a very recent radio interview on WNY: ';Diorama artist Stephen Christopher Quinn explains just what goes into crafting the one-of-a-kind nature scenes鈥攆rom the Mountain Gorillas to the Squid and the Whale鈥攁t the American Museum of Natural History. '; You can listen to the entire interview at www.wnyc.org/shows/lopate/episodes/2007/01/02 and scroll down to the 3rd segment. I heard it and it%26#39;s a great interview.

I don%26#39;t know if your reference to MMA is the Metropolitan Museum of Art or to the Museum Of Modern Art, but the Metropolitan Museum is directly across central park from the Natural History museum. If the weather is agreeable you can easily walk it, else take a bus. Admission is by donation and while they suggest $20 the reality is that you can give them anything you want and you won%26#39;t be embarrassed (I know because I%26#39;ve done it), so a ';free'; ticket there is meaningless.

Also, the Guggenheim, which is near the Metropolitan, has what looks like a great exhibit on Spanish painting from El Greco to Picasso http://www.guggenheim.org/picasso/index.html

One other thing, if you%26#39;re coming in February, you should consider The New Victory Theater which will be showing ';Looking Glass Alice'; from Feb 9 - 25 -- see www.newvictory.org/show.m?showID=1007152. This looks like a great show and I%26#39;m taking my family on the 10th. I%26#39;ve been to many shows at The New Vic and am happy to report that it%26#39;s very cheap by Broadway standards (regular ticket prices from 12.50 - 40.00). I%26#39;ve often gotten the cheap balconey seats and they%26#39;re great.

We%26#39;re there for 3 full days, plus half day on each end, Thurs-Mon.

I hadn%26#39;t considered doing both, what with the NBC tour she wants to do too.

My original itinerary had MMA in morn, NBC and ToR in the afternoon...probably Friday, perhaps Saturday. After the tours, dinner and a show.

You posted while I was writing. :-)

We%26#39;re coming end of March, otherwise I would love to see the show you mentioned. Our community theater is doing Alice in Wonderland this coming summer. It would have been fun to see a different adaptation!

Yes, MMA is supposed to be the Met (I forget the right nicknames!). I%26#39;m kind of leaning towards Nat. Hist. Museum and the Guggenheim, neither of which I%26#39;ve seen (it%26#39;s nice for me to see new stuff too). And yes, a free ticket to the Met does seem ridiculous!

Haven%26#39;t followed all of this but:

    1) use the free ticket for Mus. of Nat. hist. and then pay you want to go to the Met. If you don%26#39;t have enough time for both, I%26#39;d go to the Met.

    2) TOTR is the nicer experience and you get a good view of the ESB from TOTR. If you only have time for 1, go there--TOTR. No combo entry for NBC tour but it is in the same building.

the new vic has a very interesting show, a drama for kids, march 16-25, if those dates work: www.newvictory.org/show.m?showID=1007310

Valentines Day Evening Restaurant for my girlfriend and I...

We will be staying at the W on Lexington beginning on Valentines Day.

Any suggestions for a somewhat romantic restaurant for Valentines?

I havent been to NYC since I was a little kid, my girlfriend goes all of the time.

It would be nice to have reservations set for dinner without having to ask her where we should go.

Price range preferably $50-$75 a person.

Valentines Day Evening Restaurant for my girlfriend and I...

There are many lovely places. Are you considering drinks and/or wine in your price range?

Valentines Day Evening Restaurant for my girlfriend and I...

I have mentioned this place a lot on the board lately because I dined there twice recently, so I apologize for the overkill, but on my last visit I took one of the flyers at the door at Cibo for their Valentine%26#39;s Day dinner.

Here is the information. It is a prix fixe menu, three courses for $55. I personally think it is a very good deal, and the atmosphere and service are very nice, fresh flowers on the table. Chocolate souffle very good. Ask for a booth.

    For more information visit cibonyc.com.

Please know that%26#39;s it%26#39;s very hard to get reservations at the most well known/romantic places for V%26#39;day in NYC. It%26#39;s really a bad night to go out. Most locals try to avoid it and celebrate another night (previous Sat. or following Sat.)

That said, you%26#39;re visiting and want a nice time. I%26#39;d get out of midtown. If you like French food Le Gigot is a small bistro in the village. If you like Italian, Il Buco or Po are also both in the village. Erminia is fancier on the upper east side. Vivolo is another nice Italian in a townhouse on the upper east side.

The Little Owl is a newer place in the village getting raves, but it may be hard to get a res. there.

Going to New York for 4 nights in June with my husband(celebrating our 40th birthdays). Cannot decide between the Belvedere or the New York Helmsley on 42nd street. Any opinions from anyone who has stayed at either hotel?

    help me choose

The Belevedere is ranked 25th overall in New York. If you go to the left hand column at the side of this page, you can click on Belvedere amongst the list of hotels and access 718 different guest reviews of this hotel. The Helmsley is ranked 56th overall. If you click on the New York Helmsley on the left hand column at the side of this page, you can access 202 traveller reviews of the Helmsley. This will help you to come to a final decision as between the two hotels.

    help me choose

In theory the Helmsley should be nicer because it is a 4* hotel compared to the Belvedere being a 3*, but there are other factors to consider.

Does location matter? The Belvedere is closer to the theater district, the Helmsley is closer to Grand Central Terminal.

What kind of room would you be getting at each hotel?

Definitely look at the candid photos of each hotel on this site to pick the one you feel most comfortable about.

P.S. Not suggesting, for one moment, that you should read all of these reviews. But if you read the more recent reviews of both hotels you will get a flavour of what they%26#39;re like.

I agree, location should matter in your decision. I have not stayed at the Belvdere, but have stayed at the NY Helmsley, and it was fine. Not my first choice but definitely doable. The rooms were large for NYC, adequate and clean and I liked it there.

Hope whichever hotel you decide on works out for you.....

Can I through another hotel in for your choice, the Sofitel is number 1 on this site and deserves it. We stayed there last year and can highly reccommend it.

Both hotels are good budget hotels. I know I%26#39;m a broken record on this subject, but I would pick one, make a cancellable reservation-avoid prepayment-- and keep looking at specials on travelzoo.com, quikbook.com and elsewhere closer to your trip. You may find a ritzy hotel for the same price or less. Also check affinia.com Their hotels are nice suite hotels.

staying at Brookside Inn/Tir Na Grainne

Our team will be there for a week this summer and the adults are staying here- heard it was about 3 miles from the ball park? anyone heard of it- it looks nice-

Don%26#39;t know much about the place but it really looks like they really spruced the place up. Looks great!

will do- any other activities we can do when we aren%26#39;t playing ball- we are from Alabama and know nothing about Cooperstown- will be there 4th of July week- what is the fireworks law up there? any fireworks celebrations in Cooperstown?? Thanks again

Are your boys playing @ Dreams Park? My son played there for the last 2 summers, so we%26#39;ve had 2 very fun weeks under our belts. Bear in mind, you%26#39;ll be watching a lot of ball - but what else is new?

    ;-)

Go back to p 3 of the Cooperstown forum. There are many posts about places to visit and things to do in Cooperstown. I do have a suggestion - buy one more souvenir t-shirt than you think you%26#39;ll wear or want. I just wore one tonight and wished I had another!!! Wearing it brings back many fond memories. Enjoy your week!

The Dreams Park has a fireworks display every thur.

Also Cooperstown fireworks display is on Sat. at lakefront park.

It gets really crowded. You can also view them at the Otesaga%26#39;s golf course.

Unfortunately personal fireworks are illegal but you hear them going off during the holiday.

will the park not do fireworks on the actual 4th of July(Wednesday this year)

I really don%26#39;t know. Thur. is your last night that is y they shoot them

    off.

You are going to be to busy watching bb to watch fireworks.

    OK- thanks

Seats at Neil Simon Theatre for Hairspray

My daughter and I would like to go see Hairspray and the 8:00 show on 2/2/07 is the only show that will work with our tight schedule. I%26#39;ve been checking for tickets all day and the two same best seats have not changed and I%26#39;m afraid to buy them based on the seating chart. The seats are row F seats 17 and 19. Does anyone know if these would be OK? She really wants to go but doesn%26#39;t want to be disappointed if she can%26#39;t see. Let me know your thoughts.

    Thank you!

Seats at Neil Simon Theatre for Hairspray

Hairspray is a great show. I think you will be fine.

Seats at Neil Simon Theatre for Hairspray

    I say keep checking.

    Is it Telecharge/Broadwayoffers.com?

If so, they%26#39;ll let you look for different seats for the same performance.

Or better yet, call the toll free number and talk to a live operator.

Here;s a good seating chart in case you don%26#39;t have one.

    nederlander.org/hairspray/neil_simon_seats.h鈥?/a>

I think the seats would be ok but I wouldn%26#39;t want to pay full price for them. YOu can get them for $65 plus fees by using the code box7.

Before buying them, you might phone/write

www.applause-tickets.com and see what they can offer and at what price.

I agree with broadwaynyc and followed that advice, requested front mezzanine and got offered D 103/104 in the mezzanine. You might prefer that. But I also agree that phoning them to speak to a live person is the best option. I%26#39;d also phone applause-tickets and see what they have before making a decision.

Thank you NYwhiz! You have answered several of my questions and I really appreciate all your help (and everyone else%26#39;s too). I did use the code for discounted seats at $65 (thank you), but I just wasn%26#39;t sure how limited the view would be because these seats are the very last ones on the left :(. I even tried searching for tickets without the code and the same two tickets came up but were $110.

    Madame Tussauds LV or NYC?

    Hi,

On our trip to the USA I want to go to Madame Tussauds and i%26#39;m not sure whether to go to the one in LV or the one in NYC. Has anyone been to both and can comment on which is better? If both are very different I will probably go to both.

    Thanks

    Madame Tussauds LV or NYC?

    Hello,

My friend has been to both museums. I asked her which she would recommend. She said that the NYC is so much better because the lay-out was so much nicer and that she was rushed through the displays at Vegas..

I was at the NYC one and thought that the layout was wonderful for the volume of people who had entered. I never felt rushed and was able to take as many pictures as I wanted.

    I hope that this helps! : )

    Madame Tussauds LV or NYC?

I don%26#39;t know the answer to your question, but Mme. Tuss. in NYC is very expensive but there are usually discounts to be found somewhere. Right now thru end of Feb., you can get $8 off/ticket here

    www.nycvisit.com/PaintTownSearch/index.cfm鈥?/a>

I%26#39;ve been to both and the one in NYC is better in my opinion. Whatever you choose, have a great time.

I%26#39;ve only been to the one in NYC. From my perspective it was kind of interesting in a waxy kind of way. But I far preferred the time I spent talking to real people in NYC.

Hotel for family of 5 or 6

We will be visiting around July 4th this year and were wondering where to stay on a low budget. Should we stay in Manhattan or go to the outskirts, some 5 miles or so away? Any suggestions would be great.

Hotel for family of 5 or 6

Manhattan is an island, and islands do not have outskirts -- you are either on them, or you are not. Manhattan is also NOT synonymous with New York City; Manhattan is in fact the smallest of the five boroughs in area. New York City has outskirts -- but if you mean ';the edge of the heavily built up area';, they are a minimum of twenty miles from Manahttan!!

What you are in fact wanting to ask is whether you should stay in Manhattan, or else either in Queens or New Jersey near a form of rapid transit. That question has been adressed a number of times on this forum; you might try searching for ';Queens';, ';PATH train';, or ';Jersey City';.

Hotel for family of 5 or 6

Depends on what your budget is, how old the kids are and how long you%26#39;re staying. Always better to stay IN Manhattan but if it%26#39;s the diff. between coming or not, stay in Jersey CIty. Unfortunately though, since there are some great views of fireworks from jersey City, you may find the cost is not much better than staying in Manhattan.

Have a look at radiocityapartments.com and nycsalisbury.com or the Best Western Hospitality.

The laws in NYC don`t permit more than 4 guests in a hotel room. A suite or 2 hotel rooms are probably the only alternatives if you`re going to stay in Manhattan. I frequently make this suggestion to families and believe it is the best value you`ll find: The family suites at The Comfort Inn Chelsea. It`s well located at 18 W. 25th Street, just West of 5th Avenue and Madison Square Park. It`s also close to several subway stops. This is an older hotel that was bought and renovated by Choice Hotels last year. The results are nice, with compact, pleasantly decorated rooms, an amiable helpful staff and an expanded continental breakfast is included in the nightly rate. The suites are actually 2 bedrooms (1 king, 2 doubles) and one bathroom. The Internet or AAA rate for that time period is $305. You`ll pay considerably more for 2 rooms elsewhere or for a suite (where a sofa be will be involved.) The included breakfast for a family of 5 is a savings not to be overlooked.....probably at least $50 per day. If you book this at choicehotels.com it is cancellable up until 24 hours before your arrival date with no penalties. It could be prudent to book this as soon as possible, then you can cancel if something better comes along.

    Opening ceremonies-what time?

anyone remember what time the opening ceremonies are for the week- i%26#39;ve been told Saturday night but plan to look at flights in the next month and wanted to make sure we allowed enough time from airport etc!! Thanks

    Opening ceremonies-what time?

6pm. However, if I recall correctly, the boys had to be lined up and ready to go a few hours earlier (I want to say by 3 - I%26#39;ll have to ask my son for sure). Keep in mind that they have to check in by Saturday noon. Parents are allowed onto the Ballpark Village (clubhouse - dorms) premises during Friday %26amp; Saturday check-in. You also get to drive your car up to the team%26#39;s clubhouse during this time to unload all of your child%26#39;s gear, bedding, etc. After this (Sat.), you will not be allowed back into the village, even during their check-out, unless you%26#39;re one of the coaches. As for checking into the dorms, the early bird gets to pick his bunk!!! Sheets will be on the bunks waiting for you.

As for Opening Ceremonies, the teams form a long procession from the village and into Stadium 3. They will be in alphabetical order...make sure your team has a banner! It%26#39;s important to have that team banner because the teams will be wearing either their blue or red uniform (uniforms will be issued on Sat. morning). It%26#39;s hard to tell which is your son or team...the banner helps to ID the team.

Opeining Ceremonies is a long process. Not everybody can fit into that staduim, especially w/ 96 teams. By the 2nd year, we figured out to wait until the last half of the alphabet to go through since our team started with a ';T.'; BTW, for Closing Ceremonies, they go from Z-A. It%26#39;s not as crazy or packed because some teams and families will have already checked out.

Feel free to ask any more questions!!!

    Opening ceremonies-what time?

Thanks- our boys are going up with the coaches on Friday-parents coming on Saturday- we are working hard on the banner- I am assuming they check in on Friday since they are going Friday- we are a M name so right in the middle- not sure about when to go- is it worth taking a video or is it too far away? any other tips -PLEASE HELP!!! this is our 1st time-

    Hello!

Here are some links to former posts re: Dreams Park. There%26#39;s lots of info %26amp; tips in there:

This next link has NYC to Cooperstown driving tips and some info on Hall of Fame:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g47529-i570-k16348…

I sure hope that you%26#39;ll have a car - there%26#39;s a lot of driving back %26amp; forth. Also, bring a visor or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cushion if you need it. The spectators sit in green plastic chairs. Last summer, we needed umbrellas and ponchos. We purchased the ponchos in the gift shop at the park. Of course, be sure to bring lots of $$$ ;-)

As for Opening Ceremonies, there will be so many people there and it takes forever. Even though ceremonies begin @ 6, people start filling up the stadium a few hours in advance to stake out seats for their team families. The 1st year we did that, the 2nd year, we just slid right in and missed all of the presentations, etc..

After Opening Ceremonies are the contests: ';Around The Horn,'; ';Roadrunner,'; ';King of Swat,'; %26amp; ';Golden Arm.'; They are in different fields so everybody scatters.

There%26#39;s so much to do. Once again, feel free to ask. BTW, none of the posts dealt w/ pin trading. That ,in itself, is a whole other game!!!

thanks so much- one question- how do people leave early if they%26#39;re flying- isn%26#39;t it hard to get a flight home early- we will all have cars -the team will have 2 vans and we (parents) are all renting cars- hoping the boys will be able to join us a few nights for a cookout at the Brookside Inn- some say they are supposed to stay near the quarters- does it really matter-of course on free nights-

Re: leaving early: you%26#39;ll find that the competition level runs the gamut. Some teams are there just for the experience, some are out to win the whole enchilada. Lots of teams/families drive in. You%26#39;ll know by Tuesday how you%26#39;ll fare in the tournament that starts on Wed. (this is in addition to your regularly scheduled games starting Sunday %26amp; ending Wed. morning). Some teams, if eliminated early, will leave.

As for checking your team/child out of the park, you can take them where you wish since you%26#39;ve signed them out. However, you%26#39;ll be at the mercy of your schedule. Games are played around the clock, starting at 8am and play well into the evening (and that%26#39;s not factoring in rain delayed games). It seems the 1st year we had lots of time between games but we stuck to the schedule. Last summer, we had so many rain delays that we didn%26#39;t get to check out the boys for a long period of time. Besides, they won%26#39;t want to leave the village anyway. They have just as much fun on their down time as they do playing ball.

OK- that%26#39;s kinda what we heard but I was just double checking- so we don%26#39;t really see the boys very much except maybe b/f and after a game??

You%26#39;ll see the kids b/f the game while they%26#39;re warming up. If you have a big break after the game, this will be the time you%26#39;ll most likely take them. What we usually did was check the whole team out and then left toe eat somewhere. Whatever the destination, they%26#39;re eating with their teammates and you still don%26#39;t get any time together! The only time we had with our son was the Friday night at the beginning of the week! Even on the flight home, they rearranged their seats so they could all sit together.

Hi, IM a now 17 YO who is planning on travelling to New York to meet relatives and friends.

But my problem is that all the hotels in the area require that I must be 18-21 YO + inorder to check in.

Now this is a problem to me as Im travelling alone and I have several rather important events that I cant miss ( weddings, etc).

Im not entirely sure how to handle this situation.

If you could provide me with some possible solutions, that%26#39;d be great.

    Checking in.

Myself and a friend stayed at a hotel in NY when we were 17. We just got his father to call the hotel to book and fax over his credit card details to them to secure the room. Best if you speak to them in person to sort it out.

    Checking in.

    thanks for the quick reply.

    ajeleonard,

    which hotel did you stay?

Im just curious as some hotels may not allow me to pull off the same thing you have.

Did you come across any other problems?

    Also,

If anyone has any other ideas, please feel free to help a young traveller out!

Battery Park, WTC, SoHo & Chinatown

My daughter and I are planning on going from Battery Park to the WTC then to SoHo and on to Chinatown. Should we plan on catching a taxi, a bus, or a subway between any of these locations? I went this past weekend to a map store and bought an EXCELLENT map of midtown Manhattan (it shows every store, restaurant, Starbucks, etc.) but I don%26#39;t have a map of these areas and could really use someone%26#39;s advise on the best plan of action since our time is limited. I appreciate your help! :)

Battery Park, WTC, SoHo %26amp; Chinatown

If you are not pressed for time and the weather god shines down on you - I think that you could easily walk these areas over the course of the day. If not, the subway is very easy and there should be a complete subway map in your Manhattan map.

Battery Park, WTC, SoHo %26amp; Chinatown

hopstop.com will tell you how and how long using all the options you list.

There%26#39;s a free shuttle bus downtown that could be helpful. Info here

    www.downtownny.com/gettingaround/?sid=19

A map of downtown is (imo) far more important than midtown. Midtown is a simple grid with numbered streets that%26#39;s easy to navigate. Downtown is more higgeldy piggledy and a challenge for me. ;) Get a decent map online or go back to the bookstore. ;)

You can get two FREE and EXCELLENT maps of downtown directly in front of the WTC, at the little visitors%26#39; kiosk. Or, if you have time, you can order them FOR FREE at this website:

    http://www.downtownny.com/mapsguides/

Order the Downtown New York Fold-Out Map (on first page) and the restaruatn and shopping maps. (2nd page)

Actually, I notice they don%26#39;t have the one I really like. It is black on the outside, and includes a description of every freakin%26#39; hsitorical site, building, statue, etc. You can def get it at the kiosk. I love that map!

Or, you can take a virtual cyber walk around the area:

    http://www.downtownny.com/?sid=323

Not to be outdone, the Lower Manhattan Development Corp has its own webstie, guides and virtual tour (on right side of page)

    http://lowermanhattan.info/about/

I wrote a long description of walking from the Staten Island Ferry (Battery Park) to Fulton Street in this post:

    tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g60763-i5-k827858-鈥?/a> -Itinerary_lower_manhattan-

Once you have the map, I hope you can follow along.

Anyway, you can def walk from Battery Park to the WTC to South Street Seaport or the Brooklyn Bridge. Then, it depends on your stamina. You can eat lunch at the South Street Seaport (nice views of Brooklyn Bridge, plus Abercrombie and Fitch, lots of teen shopping, etc.) then soldier on.

Or, what I would do is take the train one stop to Chinatown, and then walk to Soho.

Take the R or W train at City Hall uptown one stop to Canal Street. (I%26#39;d usually reco the Cortlandt Street stop, but it is closed until Spring 2007.) Or you can take the #6 train at Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall uptown one stop to Canal Street. (DON%26#39;T take the #4 or #5 - they are express lines and do not stop at Canal.)

Here is a link to a great map of Chinatown:

    www.explorechinatown.com/Gui/Content.aspx鈥?/a>

If you are too tired to walk from Chinatown to Soho, take the R or W train uptown one stop from Canal Street to Prince Street. This will be right inthe heart of Soho.

Here is a shopping map of Soho (I think it%26#39;s getting a littel outdated.:

    http://artseensoho.com/map.html

If you do plan on walking the whole way up, I%26#39;d reco Broadway, or switch over to Lafayette St. north of City Hall.
