Niketown on 57th is also a lot of fun. 5 futuristic floors of sneakers and more. (near 5th ave, just behind Tiffanys)
You can try Modells, they are just near times square - I found another store on Broadway further downtown - they also carry casual clothing like jeans also work gear.
I agree - hard to bear Paragon for breadth and high quality.
Modells is a great chain for baseball, tennis, football, running gear, clothes, etc.

Super Runners Shops are, obviously, for runners and others.
Foor Locker and Lady Foot Locker do clothes and sneakers (trainers)
Sports Authority is mostly clothes and small gear (small weights, hats, visors, etc.)
