Best area to stay in New York for firstimers!

Help! Trying to plan a trip with my family to New York this summer. We%26#39;ve never been there and am unsure which area to stay in. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced hotel in an area that is convenient to most sight seeing destinations? My children are 24, 21 and 16. Thank you!

Everybody tends to stay in Times Square however there are so many good hotels all over the city and I don%26#39;t think Times Square is the very best. The area around Carnegie Hall is good, the East Side near Grand Central is good too.

check out travelzoo.com and see what deals they have (these are usually for the near-term).

There are good hotels in SoHo, your question can%26#39;t be answered very easily, there is no ';secret'; neighborhood that only the locals can suggest, we can try to help you decide what is best for you based on your specific needs and choices and price range.

Hi,

As a family of four due to the price we stayed at the Travel Inn near 42nd and 10th Ave last September. We found this location to be great, 5 -10 minute walk from Time Square and near the sub way which will take you anywhere in NY. We also used the taxis/cabs a lot especially at the end of the day, when toooo tired from all the walking. Personally no matter where you stay you will have a wonderful time - I think it really comes down to what price you want to pay for your accommodation.

The best thing we did was have a %26#39;New York Greeter%26#39; who met us on our first day in New York and showed us around for 4 hours - she was fabulous!!! She really helped us to get our bearings and showed us how to use the sub way etc....she was a wealth of information. A MUST FOR ANY FIRST TIMER and best of all the service is FREE!!!!!!

Havea great trip.

sorry they are called %26#39;Big Apple Greeter%26#39;

What is your per night budget and do you think you would be interested in two rooms? With ';kids'; your age, they really like their privacy.

I recommend the Doubletree Suites in Times Square. Our family has stayed there with kids around the same age and we all loved the hotel and location. It was very convenient to walk to many sites, near the subway, theaters, Rockefeller Center, and the kids love Times Square at night.

Radio City Apartments gets lots of recommendations on here and based on that we%26#39;ve nooked to stay there in May.

They have a 48hr cancellation poliy so if you find a last minute deal you like the look you cancel without charge.

Ditto on the Doubletree in Time Square. You%26#39;re close to everything. We walked to Broadway shows, restaurants, Central Park, Top of the Rock, etc.

Also the rooms are a decent size and the hotel staff is very helpful.

Consider Best Western Hospitality House too-there is lots about it on this forum. I loved the area-very safe and subway really close by.

I never thought I%26#39;d say this but I%26#39;ve just stayed at the Radio City Apartments and I think for a first timer the location really can%26#39;t be beat - it%26#39;s just round the corner from Time Square but without being really noisey. We had a one bed suite which had two double beds in one room and a sofa bed in the lounge area - although the beds were fairly small.....I believe they also have 2 bed apartments. www.radiocityapartments.com - they aren%26#39;t luxurious by any means but the room I had had a full kitchen (fridge, cooker, coffee machine, kettle, microwave) and new bathroom. I shall be doing a review soon and posting some pics that I took.

ljg - glad you enjoyed your stay at the RCA - looking forward to review and your trip report.
