Places to eat

My 10 year old son and I will be in Cooperstown for a few days in early August. We are staying at the Landmark Inn (hopefully the good reviews on TripAdvisor are correct).

We plan to hit the HOF for two days before heading to Lake Placid for two days.

Any suggestions for lunch and dinner while we are in Cooperstown?

Also - would we be able to get on Doubleday Field to play some catch? Or is access restricted?

Thanks

For burgers salads sandwiches and casual fare..try the Doubleday Cafe on Main Street..Nicolettas also on Main Street has very good Italian/Continental Fare, The Otesaga Hotel has excellent food and a Sunday Brunch that is fabulous..beautiful too overlooking the lake...and a short way out of town at the marina, is Blue Mingo, a great little lakeside bistro with great atmosphere and food..there are lots of dining options in and around town..just ask your hotel about which ones take reservations..it will be busy in August..have fun

You might do a search on foodnetwork.com. I know Rachael Ray did a $40 a Day show there recently and she always has good suggestions.

Yum to Nicolettas!!!! Always a great restaurant for Lake Placid - right across from the olympic hockey rink.

Nicoletta%26#39;s in Cooperstown is excellent for dinner. There%26#39;s also a little deli almost right next door to Nicoletta%26#39;s (sorry, I have forgotten the name) which has great sandwiches, salads and a few baked goods. We were there on a rainy weekend this past fall and Doubleday Field was closed and gated. I don%26#39;t know if there is access when the weather is nice.

Just got back from Cooperstown. The suggestions given are good choices. We ate frequent meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) at Doubleday Cafe. Ya gotta love the slogan on the back of their t-shirts re: Cooperstown, ';A drinking town with a baseball problem.';

As for Doubleday Field, there were games being played throughout the day - you could come and go to watch. I don%26#39;t recall a time when the fields were empty if you want to play catch though.

As for parking on Main Street (where HOF and shops are located), parking is 2 hours. Traffic enforcement officers put chalk markings on tires and then check later on, so be careful.

I live in Cooperstown - SO, yes the Doubleday Cafe and Nicolettas are great places to eat. But try the Cooperstown Diner, small and tucked into Main Street- but its where the locals go - open for breakfast, lunch, dinner. But a 10 year old boy mught like Sal%26#39;s Pizzeria, also on Main st. THere%26#39;s also the Pioneer Street Patio for indoor or outdoor dining. THe Bistro, down the alley from the Hall of Fame and The Bull Pen around the corner from the HOF are also really good. The Bull Pen does lunch sandwiches on bagels - and more. OR drive 3 miles out of town to the Fly Creek Cider Mill-lots of goodies besides the cider, and the usual MacDonalds, Pizza Hut and numerous ice cream stands. WE Cooperstownians love to eat!!

The market next the Nocoletta%26#39;s is Danny%26#39;s Market. They have great sandwiches that you can take to the neighboring park or the lake front for a picnic. Don%26#39;t miss Schneider%26#39;s Bakery for truly the best doughnuts on earth. You may need to jog around the lake to work them off but it%26#39;ll be worth it. For a quick bite, Sal%26#39;s Pizza on Main Street is good.

Thanks for the all the advice. We ended up with a late meal at Sal%26#39;s Pizzeria the first night we were in Cooperstown. Good pizza and the least expensive meal we ate on our vacation. We had stayed until nearly 9:00 p.m. at the Hall, so many of the restaurants were not open.

We had lunch at the Doubleday Cafe. Very good food and a good time. We went in about 11:30 and the crowd was not too bad.

We had dinner the second night at the Short Stop. Food was good, but the service was very slow. I could not recommend due to the slowness of service. We tried a few of the places recommended, but there was either a long wait or nothing on the menu that interested my 10 year-old.

Thanks also for the heads-up on the no refills on drinks. I found the same when we went to Lake Placid after we left Cooperstown. Maybe it is due to the lack of national chain restaurants in either town, but I have not been to restaurants with no refills on soft drinks or iced tea in many years. Thing is, the price for the drinks is the same as the free refill drinks I get here in Indy and in many cases only half the size. The Doubleday Cafe was around $1.50 for a 12 ounce soft drink.

We eventually realized we should just get the same drink and get a pitcher at most of the restaurants.

We could not get on Doubelday Field to play catch. Access was restricted each time we were there. We did play catch on the front and back yards of our B%26amp;B (Landmark Inn - I submitted a separate review).

Cannot believe that no one mentioned Brooks BBQ chicken in Oneotna. This restaurant was featured on the Food Network with Rachel Ray as best fod and best bargin. You will not believe how cheap this place is. The bbq chicken is out of this world. The ribs are really good too, if you like sweet ribs! They do not serve alcohol in case you like a beer or glass of wine with dinner. It is probably a 25 min ride from Cooperstown, believe me you wont be sorry!
