a bit worried about the subway

when we go to new york,i was wondering if the subway is easy to use.is it easy to find where you want to go ? iv%26#39;e looked on the map thingys and it does look very confusing, with all the different coloured lines.

We used the subway a lot - its just invaluable for getting places quickly. I did find it very hard at first but after a day or two, and a mistake or two, its great. Try to figure out what station is best for you, look at the letters like say R or N or A or whatever stops there and work backwards to where you are. Several stations have connections and these are clearly announced on board as well. Manhattan was easy because you are usually either going updown or downtown. Best of all don%26#39;t worry too much, get one of the clear subway maps and ask if in doubt just to be sure. Subways are way more than just a way to travel as you see a big cross section of people on board and regular entainment as well. A weekly pass costs just 24 dollars, a daily 7 I think, so its great value as well. Enjoy - wish we were back there!!

First tip is forget about colors and concentrate on numbers and letters. ;)

We just got back from New York and used the public transportation for everything. I%26#39;d recommend planning out your trip before you hit the streets. We mainly had trouble when we were just winging it. Don%26#39;t be afraid to ask for help from the locals. We never had anyone lead us astray and met some really nice people in the process.

subway is easy and fast. I used it exclusivly with my 3 sons last summer. never felt afraid or uncomfortable and we rode it to a Yankee game and Coney Island and up toi Harlem for a tour. Carry the map with you. Mine was tattered at the end of the week. Locals love to help tourists. Have fun.

thanks everyone

just printed of the idiots guide to the subway by greenwhiteblue.going to have a good read now .

Have you used subways in other cities? If so, you should be fine. I find the NY subway a bit more complicated than London%26#39;s tube network but it%26#39;s easy to navigate once you know what you are doing.

If you aren%26#39;t familiar with subway systems then don%26#39;t worry. A bit of research as you are doing will help hugely. If you%26#39;re in the station and don%26#39;t know where to go or what to do, there%26#39;ll be an information booth where you can ask for help. Alternatively, I%26#39;m sure any local would be happy to help you if you did get stuck.

Depending how long you are staying, definitely think about buying a pass. We got a 7-day one (for either $22 or $24, I forget) and used the subway numerous times a day so it worked out a bargain.
