Tipping in Bars in Manhatton

I am going to New York in earlier March. Can someone let me know what the norm is in Bars in Manhatton.

How much should I tip?

Do you run a Tab?

Thanks in advance for your help

About 1-2 dollars per round is what we tipped.

In one bar, we noticed our drinks getting stronger as the night went on so I think the bar maid appreciated it!

Keep in mind that bartenders make 80 - 100% of their income on your gratuities.

If you order three drinks for your table and one person is paying for the round, say it comes to $21.00, you can leave $25.00, if its $25.00 you can pay $30.00.

Some bars, the one%26#39;s that accept credit cards, will allow you to run a tab however you need to leave your credit card.

Tip generously, this is not an inexpensive city to live in and you have to serve a heck of alot of drinks at $1.00 a drink to pay the rent (and don%26#39;t forget we don%26#39;t have socialized medicine so they need to pay for that too).

Everything you wanted to know about tipping in NYC, but were afraid to ask.

A dollar or two a drink. If you are sitting at the bar, you can just leave the tip on the bar or just say keep the change. Many bars still (not in the Times Square tourist areas) will give you a buy back (a free drink) fairly regularly if you tip.

Is the buy back idea common across Manhatton, as we are staying near Grand Central Station ?

Regarding Buy backs, really depends. The more ';local'; the more you will see it, that said I remember getting a free one fairly recently at an Irish bar near Grand Central.

My favorite bar in Astoria (part of Queens) every third drink is free.
