Suggestions for Great Italian in Greenwich Village

Hi, me again! This time next week I will be in NYC - so excited! We are staying in the Times Square area but want a really full on night out in the Village.

We would like to eat good Italian food before hitting the bars of Bleeker Street (thought about Red Lion, Back Fence - as recommended in previous post) - any ideas on the Italian Restaurant? Looking for mid-priced great anitipasti (calamari, eggplant parmeggano etc) and good seafood pasta and/or gnocchi.

Thanks also for the tip try somthing away from the bars in Times Square, we are going to spend our first night around there, grabbing a bit to eat and getting very drunk in a couple fo the bars there, but this time (on our 3rd trip) we are going to venture away from our comfort zone - and yes - use the subway at night!!!

Otto on 8th street and 5th ave is excellent-the pizza is incredible and the pasta and antipasto are also very good. The place is owned by celeb-chef Mario Batali,so it gets really crowdwed, but its casual and you can wait for your table while you have drinks at the bar. There is also Lupa on Thompson street at Houston st.I have never eaten there myself, but heard it was good.If you want a great place(pub) for some drinks, try Puck Fair on Laffayete at Houston st.It gets crowded, but thats what you want!

Thank you all so much, great info (as usual). Very much looking forward to coming back!

The bars on Bleeker are a lot of fun! I go at least once a year down there, usually over the summer though. Not too sure about Italian restaurants over there though, as we usually hit Little Italy when we are down there.

You are looking in the wrong Village for good Italian. I have been to the finest restaurants in Little Italy and none compare to Frank in the East Village.

I used to work right around the corner from the Red Lion. If it was me and I wanted to get good Italian in the Village at a reasonable price, I%26#39;d pick Lupa at 170 Thompson Street between Bleecker and Houston. It%26#39;s owned by the Italian Iron Chef Mario Balali. Otherwise, Ennio and Michael at 539 laGuardia Place is also right near there and isn%26#39;t that expensive. Rocco at 181 Thompson St., Villa Masconi at 69 MacDougal Street or Tratorria Pesce at 262 Bleecker are all fine. Two top Italian restaurants (among the best in the city) are in the area, Il Mulino at 86 West 3rd Street and Babbo at 110 Waverley Place but these places definitely need advanced reservations and are quite expensive. If you want pizza you might as well go to Jonh%26#39;s Pizzeria at 278 Bleecker Street but expect a line if you go in the evening. For a drink in Times Square, I would go to the revolving restaurant/bar at the top of the Marriot.
