Hi everyone!
I have booked a cancellable reservation at the Washington Jefferson for my trip in April, but I%26#39;m now seeing a great deal for the 70 Park Avenue from Thurs-Sun, and am wondering how you would compare the two hotels?
I have read reviews on trip advisor for both hotels, but am still unsure whether changing hotels midweek is worth it? I would be staying at the WJ from Sun to Thurs, then the 70 Park Avenue Thurs- Mon.
Does any here have experience with either of these establishments that they haven%26#39;t written up as a hotel review, and would like to share with me?
Thanks :)
Washington Jefferson, or 70 Park Avenue?
It%26#39;s hard to advise others on whether it%26#39;s worth it to change locations. It generally means you lose a good part of one day. If you were thinking of going from midtown to uptown or downtown, I%26#39;d say yes, good idea if you don%26#39;t mind the packing and repacking. But moving from midtown west to midtown east, not sure it%26#39;s worth the time and trouble unless there%26#39;s money savings that would make it worthwhile.
I don%26#39;t really love either of the options you%26#39;ve got though. B/w the 2, 70 Park is a nicer place. (I don%26#39;t think the WJ is all that). So if you want one of these, I%26#39;d go with 70 Park for the whole time if that%26#39;s possible.
But the Beekman Tower has some great prices on quikbook and affinia.com for your dates. You%26#39;d have a kitchen and some more space. Don%26#39;t know why this isn%26#39;t one of your choices. A studio suite there (on affinia.com) is less than a reg. room at the Wash. Jeff. with very small rooms. True the WJ is more modern and newer looking in the rooms but... Have you looked at the ';candid travelers photos'; on the site for both?
Washington Jefferson, or 70 Park Avenue?
Thanks nywhiz for your input!
Unfortunately the Beekman towers are too expensive for me even with the cheaper deals :(
I can get a deal on a Deluxe King Room at the 70 Park Avenue for $199/night from Thurs-Sun which is why I was looking at changing hotels mid week. :) I liked the 70 Park Ave because it was close to Grand Central as well.
It will also just be me for most of the time ( a friend from NY may join me for part of the week), so although the extra space would be nice, it won%26#39;t be that necessary.
I guess I%26#39;m just a little confused at this point where to stay. I have slightly increased my budget, but would still prefer to pay $200 or less per night, plus taxes for my room if at all possible, as I am a student.
I am also in my mid 20%26#39;s, so my primary concern is to be close to areas which have a strong art/cultural leaning, and lots of nightlife. I just essentially need somewhere to sleep which is nice and clean ( and safe), and has it%26#39;s own bathroom.
I have trawled throught this site over and over, but now I%26#39;m just confused. My friend has suggested Greenwich Village, SoHo, Gramercy Park and Midtown as suitable areas to look. But is unable to give me any advice beyond that.
Any other suggestions for hotels?
Thanks.
Unless I%26#39;ve got your dates wrong, I see the Beekman Towers for less money on Affinia.com than what I think you%26#39;d be paying at the WJ. So let%26#39;s start by clearing up dates and prices. Tell me.
On April 8th , for 8 nights, on Affinia.com, the Beekman is $191.25/night plus tax. On quikbook, the WJ is $190/night but for Fri/Sat it%26#39;s $200/night so it%26#39;s actually more in total than the Beekman.
The only thing that%26#39;s arty or cultural near the WJ is the theaters and I guess MOMA isn%26#39;t too far. The Beekman is a nicer (imo) more residential area near the United Nations.
Your friend%26#39;s suggestions for neighborhoods are great, but not too many affordable hotel options in those areas. In the village, the only real hotel with private baths is the Washington Square. Very nice but pricey I think for what it is.
There are some apts/b %26amp; b%26#39;s that are nice in the village, but may be too pricey. Have a look at West 11th ST. Townhouse. The only apt. there that%26#39;s free for your dates (assuming I%26#39;ve got them right) is the Marucci. It%26#39;s $226/night (for a single--$236 if your friend stays with you) plus tax.

Abingdonguesthouse.com is another one. Some of their rooms are just around $199-210 plus tax for one person.
The options in Soho are limited--either cheap and not so nice or nice and pricey.
The affordable places in Murray Hill/Gramercy Park area are either not so nice or not that cheap for your dates.
One area your friend didn%26#39;t mention is the upper east side where there are most of the museums (the Met, Frick, Guggenheim, Whitney, Neue and more). Many young people also live there (so lots of rest., bars, shops etc.) as there are a lot of tall apt. buildings in the area. I don%26#39;t know if I mentioned a friend of mine from Australia stayed in an apt. in this area thru NYhabitat.com and was happy there although she%26#39;s older than you.
Hotel options in the area are limited but there are lots of apts. there.
Hi!
Yes, my dates are April 8th -16th (check-out). I was hoping for about $200 a night max, but can afford to strecth that a little if something really nice comes up for an extra $20-30 per night.
The Beekman looks comfortable, so that is a possibility.
A guesthouse situation is most likely not suitable for me as I will presumably be out until all hours most nights, and may disturb others coming back in. I am also one of those individuals who rarely sleeps before 3am.
I did look at apartments on nyhabitat.com the other week, but the places I was interested in were gone for my vacation dates, unfortunately.
UES %26amp; UWS are not really options due to the late hours I keep. Most of the bars and restaurants I will be attending are in SoHo, Greenwich Village and LE, and that would mean more expensive taxi rides every night.
Although I will certainly take trips to the Met, Guggenheim etc. There are quite a few smaller galleries I have my heart on seeing in the areas I mentioned. Such as Strychnin on West 33rd St.
Sorry, I realise I am being painful. I just never realised this would be so difficult. Thanks so much for all your help. It is appreciated.
Ok. I understand. For location, the Washington Square hotel is right near Washington Square park (and right at NYU=NY University) in Greenwich Village. It%26#39;s the only ';proper'; hotel there. European style. They have a single room (with a single bed %26amp; it looks tiny) for $165/night. Includes cont. breakfast. A queen room is $215 plus tax.

For an apt. style hotel, the Beekman Towers is very nice, but it%26#39;s not so close to a subway stop. For late nights out, you might be better at the Eastgate Towers (another Affinia hotel). It%26#39;s not as nice, but more convenient location. Compare prices b/w the affinia.com site and quikbook.com Also I notice the Affinia Manhattan has a good price for a regular guest room (not sure what that%26#39;s like). While not my favorite location, convenient for getting around (right near Penn station).
Murray Hill East suites is another good budget apt/hotel in east 30%26#39;s (near the EAstgate Tower).
Chelsea would be an ideal location, but the decent hotels there (Hampton Inn Chelsea, Four Points by Sheraton Chelsea, Maritime, W Union Square)are above your budget.
